Ready to broaden your coffee horizons? Portman Marylebone can help. This chic corner of the West End — owned and managed by The Portman Estate — spans Seymour Place, New Quebec Street and Chiltern Street, and is home to a fabulous range of cafés and bakeries, and right now you’ve got the chance to discover them all for less.
As part of the newly-launched Portman Marylebone Coffee Collective, every day until 13 December you can claim a free standard hot drink* to safely take away with an in-store purchase of any additional item at participating venues. Basically, it’s all about making lockdown that bit brighter for those who work, live, or travel through the area and supporting local businesses during this unusual time. Read on to see who’s taking part and find out how to claim your freebie.
First stop on your java journey? Try Monocle Café at 18 Chiltern Street. This stylish spot is an extension of the global affairs magazine Monocle, and you can pick up the latest edition here alongside a tempting selection of bagels, sandos, and pastries (the cakes by Japanese-French fusion bakery Lanka are to die for). As for your free winter warmer, Monocle keeps things local with coffee from Redchurch Street roastery AllPress.
Further up Chiltern Street, at number 6, you’ll find the local legend that is Shreeji News. Founded by Sandeep Garg, this specialist newsagents has supported locals since 1982. After six months of renovation works, it now sports a stylish new look — suffice to say it looks nothing like your average corner shop. See it for yourself while picking up your free coffee and a magazine or two.
A newer kid on the block is Chiltern Street Deli. Founded in 2019, this charming purveyor of artisan produce is all about sustainability and serving the local community. Choose from a range of carefully-sourced provisions and homemade treats to enjoy alongside your free coffee. Find it at 27 Chiltern Street.
Alternatively, you can pop around the corner to GAIL’s Bakery at 4-6 Seymour Place, the beloved breadmakers that have supplied Londoners with freshly baked loaves, pastries and cakes for the best part of two decades. Enjoy your pain aux raisin or maple and pecan drop scone alongside a cup of carefully-sourced house blend coffee.
Next up, there’s the wonderfully Instagrammable Daisy Green at 20 Seymour Street. Adorned with pink cherry blossoms and a grass carpet, this cheerful café brings a shot of Aussie coffee culture to the capital. Treat yourself to a take-away lunch from a Mediterranean-style menu with an Asian twist and get your caffeine fix on the house.
Craving flavour profiles that are a little closer to home? Head to 7A Wyndham Pl, where Boxcar Baker & Deli showcases the best of British produce. Boxcar’s beautiful selection of salads, sandwiches and sweet treats are made on-site every day using the fresh, seasonal ingredients that are ethically sourced from independent farms.
To claim your free coffee at any of the venues listed above, you firstly need to follow @portmanmarylebone on Instagram and send the word ‘coffee’ as a direct message. You’ll then be sent a special code — quote this in-store when picking up a purchase of any additional item and your barista will get you sorted.
*The Portman Marylebone Coffee Collective has a maximum of 150 hot drinks to give away each day. Each customer may redeem one free standard hot drink a day. This includes espresso, americano, short black, hot chocolate, tea, cappuccino, macchiato and latte.
