Friday the 13th might be unlucky for some but for graphic art aficionados and lovers of London transport, it’s a date to remember for all the right reasons this autumn.
That’s because on Friday 13 November the posters and prints in London Transport Museum’s stunning online shop will be slashed to half-price*. From ancient art deco London Underground advertisements to the vibrant cosmic designs of the sixties, this is your chance to brighten up your home (or gift a loved one) with a piece of transport history for 50% less.
This incredible offer lasts for three days only, so you best start searching for a beautiful bargain straight away. With over 5000 designs from the museum’s archive spanning over a century of London’s iconic transport history, you’re certainly spoilt for choice.
Not only do these designs provide a tantalising glimpse of what getting around London was like in past — we particularly like this ‘two-penny tube’ advertisement from 1905, which seemingly seeks to soothe Edwardian anxieties about the Underground — they are also stunning works of art in and of themselves.
Over the decades, eminent artists including Enid Marx — renowned for her mid-century textile patterns — and surrealist master Man Ray have been commissioned to promote London Transport services.
Many of London Transport’s most celebrated designs came out of the 1920s and 1930s. The interwar years were something of a golden age for tube art, from beautifully bold posters by London-born designer Horace Taylor to the avant-garde work of Edward McKnight Kauffer. Thanks to the online shop’s browse-by-decade feature, finding your favourite era of London Underground art couldn’t be easier.
As well as brightening up your bedroom walls, London Transport Museum’s poster collection is a brilliant place to start with your Christmas shopping. Know a vintage map fan? There’s a poster for that. Got a friend who loves London Zoo? There’s a poster for them, too. And your cousin who’s got really into wild swimming recently? Well… you get the message.
The sale runs from Friday 13 November to Sunday 15 November, exclusively on London Transport Museum’s online shop and gives customers 50% off its massive poster collection. Click here to find your perfect piece of wall art right away.
